Familiarizing with the Guitar

There’s something about guitar than can turn a normal song into a phenomenal one. In this session, YC mentor Ashutosh Kaushik will tell the kids some interesting facts about the history of this musical instrument. After walking them through the history aspect, the mentor will familiarise kids with the basics of playing guitar and explain the components of the instrument. Kids will also learn how to guitar and how to tune the strings. They will also learn the proper names of the various parts of the guitar and what they are used for. In a nutshell, it will be an informative session.

  • Tuner or Mobile (for tuning)


Music Theory

Before you start playing guitar, you need to gain theoretical knowledge. In this session, the mentor will teach kids about different aspects such as structure, texture, harmony, tonality, melody, rhythm, and timbre. He will also make kids understand the orientation of the notes and how to play and find out about a scale of a particular note. The kids will also learn about the half note and the proper names for all the keys and the number of notes.

2 Fun Songs on 1 String

This session will be interactive yet fun as finally, kids will get a chance to put their theory to practice. The mentor will teach kids two easy songs that would require them to only use one string of the guitar and utilize the E scale. They will learn to play two popular songs, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Happy Birthday To You.

The GDEmC chord progression

This session will be both informative and engaging as kids play and sing the song simultaneously. Kids will also get to learn the corresponding chords which are G major, C major, E minor, and D major along with the hand and finger placement. The mentor will teach them to rectify the problems with buzzing and mutes.

Playing songs using the progressions

As we progress, kids will get to learn how to play two more popular songs, ‘Perfect' by Ed Sheeran and 'Teri Mitti' from the Bollywood movie Kesari. They will use the knowledge of progressions they gained in the previous session while playing the songs.

All the major chords (No Bar)

With each session, kids will gain confidence and would be able to master the chords. In this session, the mentor will teach them about all the major chords that do not require them to hold a bar. They will learn the meaning of bar chords and memorize 6 major chords from the natural scale along with the formula.

Difference between the leads and chords

In this session, the mentor will explain the differences between the chords and leads of a song. Kids would learn to appreciate music and understand the emotion behind it. They will learn the leads and chords to the song "Papa Kehte Hain" and the song "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC.

Learning two new types of chords

We know it can be challenging for you to learn guitar but knowing a musical instrument will only add a feather to your hat. In this session, kids will be learning about the suspended 2 and dominant 7th chords. They will also learn how to distinguish between these two chords and how to change them according to the feel of the song.

Two new songs with sus2 and 7th chords.

Now the kids have learned to differentiate between the suspended 2 and dominant 7th chords, they will now try playing songs like “Valley Of The Shadow Of Death’ and ‘Jingle Bells’. They will also learn how to set the tone of the song.

Finding the scale

In this session, the mentor will teach kids about the base note of a song and how to find it. They will also learn how to melodiously find chords and harmonize with the guitar.

The "Waltz" Rhythm

We are at the final stage of this program and in this session, kids will learn about the Waltz rhythm and how to play it with the patterns taught earlier in previous sessions. As this is the last session, it will be full of excitement as kids will learn how to play mashups of two popular songs, ‘Phoolon Ke Rang Se’ and ‘Can't Help Falling In Love with the Waltz rhythm.
